Saphan Pla Bangkok, or the 'Fishing Bridge' is a popular tourist attraction located in Bangkok, Thailand. The bridge is unique in that it is made entirely out of wood and is suspended between two sides of the Chao Phraya River. Visitors can observe fishermen fishing along the river from the bridge, making for a beautiful and peaceful experience.
The entire length of the bridge spans almost 860 feet, making it one of the longest wooden bridges in Thailand. It was first built by King Rama III back in 1835 and its purpose was to provide better access to markets on both sides of the river. In addition to providing access to markets, Saphan Pla Bangkok also served as an important transportation hub between Bangkok and provinces such as Samut Prakan, Pathum Thani, and Nonthaburi at that time.
Today, visitors can enjoy a leisurely ride across Saphan Pla Bangkok while taking in the views of several temples located along the riverbank. One such temple is Wat Kallayanamitr, which has stood since 1867 and features a stunning golden chedi surrounded by lush greenery. There are also many restaurants located along both sides of the bridge that serve up traditional seafood dishes made with fresh ingredients caught off the river every day.
Many come to experience this unique piece of history as well as witness daily life along the Chao Phraya River from Saphan Pla Bangkok—from early morning fishermen dotting its waters until nightfall when vendors set up shop on both sides of the bridge for their evening market. Exploring this area will surely provide you with an unforgettable experience!
