Phra Sumen Fort, located in the heart of Bangkok, is a historic fortress that has been standing since the Ayutthaya period. Built in 1783 by King Rama I, it was originally meant to protect the city from enemy attack.
Over the centuries, it has served both as a military fortification and a symbol of national pride. Today, Phra Sumen Fort is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Bangkok and is an important part of its rich cultural heritage.
The fort itself consists of two main parts: the inner fort, which is made up of two round walls with four corner bastions; and the outer fort, which consists of four rectangular ramparts joined together by a ditch.
All around the walls are bastions that were used to provide cover for soldiers during battles or sieges. The fort has three gates, each protected by guardhouses and drawbridges which can be raised or lowered depending on security requirements at any given time. Inside, there are numerous buildings including barracks, armouries and guardhouses where soldiers kept watch over centuries past.
Today visitors can walk around these historic grounds to get a sense of what life must have been like during those times when wars were fought here. There is also an exhibition hall where visitors can learn more about the history and significance of this site, as well as see artifacts such as weapons and paintings from those ancient days. A particularly unique feature about Phra Sumen Fort is that it still retains its original wooden drawbridge - a remarkable feat considering how long this structure has been standing!
